The SAFE UV Wristband - the hottest accessory on the high street, and beach this summer!

It’s official: the charity wristband is back! This summer SAFE and Superdrug have teamed up to launch the SAFE UV Wristband - to help raise the profile of staying SAFE when out in the sun, and to raise funds for our scientists to continue their vital research into skin cancer. Please help us this summer raise awareness by buying a SAFE UV Wristband. The more that are sold the more money will go towards skin cancer research, a cancer which has now sadly become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with 75,000 new cases each year.

This is the wristband with a difference; available in 2 collectable colours red and pink, the wristband is sensitive to sunlight and is designed to change colour when worn out in the sun. The change in colour should alert the wearer that they need to re-apply sun screen (Factor 15+), cover up with a hat and loose clothing, and stay out of the sun at the hottest time of the day (between 11am and 3pm).

Hollywood’s hottest starlet, Mischa Barton, is also backing the must have accessory of the summer, and said; “I feel very strongly about supporting The Institute of Cancer Research's SAFE Campaign. I spend a lot of my life in the sun and know how important it is to be sun aware and protect your skin. I hope that my support of Superdrug’s important campaign will ensure everyone stays safe in the sun this summer whether at home, on holiday or even on the beaches of California.”

Superdrug keeps customers SAFE this Summer

Superdrug is continuing to champion the issue of skin cancer for a second year running by backing The Institute's SAFE (Skin Awareness For Everyone) Campaign this summer, and helping to promote the serious health message on the high street about staying SAFE in the sun.

Look out for SAFE when you pop in to your local Superdrug store to stock up on those summer essentials, as well as the UV Wristband other products on sale include sunglasses, beach towels and the Solait range of sunscreen (Factor 15+), all helping to raise money for skin cancer research.

Superdrug has also collected nearly 3,500 signatures for its petition asking the government to drop the VAT on children's sun care products to make them more affordable. Since last July, the retailer permanently cut the VAT from its own label Solait Kids suncare range. Please visit the Superdrug website for more information on what is going on in-store and to also find out about signing up to their Kids' Sun Tax petition.

The Institute of Cancer Research would like to thank Superdrug for its continuing support…the leading high street beauty and health retailer has not only to date raised an amazing £175,000 for the SAFE campaign but is also playing a vital role in helping us get skin awareness messages out to customers across the country.

Cindy Crawford: 2006

The SAFE Campaign launched its partnership with Superdrug in 2006 with the support of supermodel Cindy Crawford to help make people in the UK more skin and sun aware.

Cindy Crawford fronted a photographic shoot for pr and in-store communication to help raise awareness and funds, which achieved national press coverage.

Cindy Crawford said of the campaign:
"I feel passionate about supporting the SAFE @ Superdrug charity campaign. As a model and a mother I know the importance of being skin aware and I thank Superdrug's employees, suppliers and customers for its support of the Institute of Cancer Research's campaign and hope that together we can all raise much needed funds and awareness for this worthwhile cause."
