Diagnosis and treatment
What if the mole is suspicious?
If your doctor suspects skin cancer, the mole and some surrounding skin will be removed to ensure that, if there are cancer cells present, they have all been removed. Once it has been cut out, a biopsy will tell the doctor whether or not it is a melanoma.
What can be done to treat melanoma?
Most skin cancers can be treated surgically, but the earlier it is detected the better. The deeper the cancer has grown into the skin, the higher the likelihood of recurrence.
More advanced malignant melanomas can spread to the lymph nodes and other organs. Doctors may use chemotherapy to treat advanced malignant melanoma.
